Putting My Experience
to Work
Cheryl was inspired to work on social change when she was in college and met Audre Lorde who asked what role she was going to play to change the world. Since then she has been a lifelong activist and involved community member, serving on numerous boards and committees. A proud public school parent, Cheryl served as PTO Co-President at PS 282, one of the most diverse elementary schools in her Park Slope neighborhood, advocating and supporting policies to ensure diversity within the school body. Involved in Independent Neighborhood Democrats (IND) since 2008, she has served on the county committee, and as a judicial delegate. Cheryl also serves on the Chesed committee of Congregation Beth Elohim helping to care for community members in need.
Professionally, Cheryl is CEO of Avodah, a national not-for-profit with a footprint in Brooklyn. Her work involves training up current and emerging Jewish leaders in social justice, which has three houses in Brooklyn for young activists working at local anti-poverty not-for-profits. Prior to that, she worked for an environmental not-for-profit. She holds a BA from University of Wisconsin, an MSW from Columbia University, and an MA at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Cheryl lives in Park Slope in a multigenerational, multi-racial home with her spouse and two children, and her husband’s family who have roots in Brooklyn. She is excited to bring her vast leadership experience and passion for social justice to the people of the 52nd Assembly District.
